Zebra shades — also sold as day-and-night blinds, banded or layered shades — use alternating horizontal bands of sheer and solid fabric. As you move the blind, the bands line up or offset against each other, so you can go from an open view to a screened one in small steps instead of choosing between fully up and fully down.

What the banding actually does for you

The sheer bands let you see out while softening the light. The solid bands give privacy when they align with the sheer ones. Because the adjustment is continuous, you can find a position that keeps the room bright and still stops a passer-by seeing straight in — which is the whole point of the design.

That makes zebra shades particularly useful in PEI on street-facing living rooms and on windows where curtains would be too heavy and a plain blind too blunt.

Where they are the wrong choice

Being honest about this saves people an expensive mistake: zebra shades are not a blackout product. If a room needs to be properly dark — a bedroom, a shift worker’s room, a home cinema — a blackout roller, a blackout cellular shade or a dual roller will do the job properly and zebra will not.

Practical points

Fabric openness varies — a more open weave shows more of the view and gives less privacy. Worth seeing samples.
They suit both inside-recess and over-recess fitting, and we’ll advise which looks and works better on your window.
Cleaning is straightforward: dust, and wipe with a damp cloth. The banded construction doesn’t like being scrubbed hard.

Questions we’re asked most often

Do they give full privacy at night?

In a lit room at night, the sheer bands can be seen through from outside. Closing the blind fully covers the window, but if night-time privacy is the priority, a solid fabric is the safer choice.

Are they hard to install on a wide window?

Wide windows are fine; very wide ones may need more than one blind meeting in the middle, which we’d plan for at measuring. Each blind stays easy to operate that way.

Do they look dated?

No — with the right fabric and a cassette headrail they have a clean, modern look. The cheap versions that gave the product a mixed reputation are thin and shiny; the fabrics we fit are not.
