Venetian and vertical blinds are the two hard-working, unglamorous options: slats that tilt, for rooms where light control and easy cleaning matter more than softness. They are heavily used in kitchens, offices, clinics and rental properties on the island, and for the right window they are still the most practical thing you can fit.

Venetian blinds

Horizontal slats — aluminium, or a timber or faux-wood look — that tilt to control light and raise up out of the way. What they are good at:

Adjustable light — tilt for glare without closing the window down, which suits a kitchen or an office desk.
Privacy without darkness — the classic use on a street-facing room.
Wipe-clean surfaces — aluminium slats are the easiest window covering to keep clean in a kitchen or a workshop.
Small windows — where nothing else looks right, and the depth of the recess is limited.

Where they are the wrong choice: very wide windows (the stack of slats gets heavy and sags), and rooms where you want a soft look. In a steamy bathroom, choose faux-wood or aluminium over real timber.

Vertical blinds

Vertical slats, hanging and rotating in a track, usually on a patio door, a wide window or an entire wall of glazing. The reasons people still choose them:

Wide openings — they cover sliding doors and broad glazing that a single blind cannot handle well.
Access to the door — you walk through them rather than around them.
Cost per metre — for a large span, they are usually the least expensive way to get full coverage.
Commercial and rental use — offices, clinics, salons, and landlords who need something durable and neutral.

Honestly: verticals are not the fashion choice, and some people find the slats noisy in a breeze. But on a six-foot patio door in a rental, they are often exactly right — and we will say that rather than steer you to something prettier and less suitable.

Which rooms they suit on PEI

Kitchens — aluminium Venetian, above a sink or a counter where cleaning matters.
Home offices and studies — Venetian for glare control at the desk.
Patio doors and sunrooms — verticals, especially where the door is in constant use.
Rental and commercial property — verticals or durable aluminium, chosen to survive turnover.

Are vertical blinds dated?

They look dated in a living room and sensible in an office or on a patio door. Fit them where they earn their place and they do not read as cheap — they read as practical.

Do Venetian blinds let in much light?

Fully tilted open they let in nearly all of it; closed they are private but not blackout. If you need darkness, a blackout shade is the honest answer.

Are they hard to install on a wide span?
