Getting the measurements right is the part of a window-covering job that decides whether the finished result looks effortless or slightly wrong forever. It is also the part most often skipped when blinds are bought online or measured by eye. We measure on site, and the fit is our responsibility rather than yours.

Why a millimetre matters

Window coverings are made to the measurements given, so an error cannot be adjusted out afterwards. A blind even slightly too wide will rub the frame, catch as it rolls, and eventually wear through the fabric edge. Slightly too narrow and you get a bright line down one side that you will notice every sunny day. On a roller blind there is no tolerance to hide either mistake — which is why measuring properly is worth far more than it costs.

What we measure, beyond width and height

The recess — its true width and depth at several points, because old window frames are rarely square
The drop — including whether the blind needs to clear a sill or a radiator
Obstructions — window handles, casement openings that swing inward, tilt-and-turn mechanisms, alarm sensors
The mounting surface — what the brackets are going into: timber, drywall with a stud behind it, plaster, or a metal window frame
How the light behaves on that window — which decides whether the blind should sit inside the recess or over it
How you use the room — a window you open daily needs different clearance from one that stays closed

Inside the recess or over it?

This single decision affects the look, the privacy and how dark the room gets:

Inside the recess looks tidier and keeps the wall clear. It needs adequate depth, and it usually leaves a small light gap at the edges.
Over the recess blocks more light, gives more room to clear handles, and can cover an untidy frame. It takes wall space and may need a cassette or valance to look finished.

We advise per window. On a house with mixed window types you will often end up using both.

What the visit involves

Measuring takes perhaps fifteen to twenty minutes for a typical house, longer if there are unusual windows or you want to talk through fabrics. We bring samples, answer questions, and leave you with a written quote. There’s no charge for the consultation and no obligation — if you want to think about it for a week, that’s completely reasonable and we’d rather you did.

Questions we’re asked most often

Can I just measure it myself?

You can, and people do. It works well when the window is a simple square opening and the blind is a straightforward one. It goes wrong on recessed windows that aren’t square, on windows with handles or inward-opening casements, and on any blind where the fabric has to sit a specific distance from the glass. If you’re unsure, have us measure.

What if your measurement is wrong?

Then it’s ours to put right, not yours. That is the practical difference between a supplier who measures and one who asks you to.

Do you measure for blinds bought elsewhere?

No — we’re supplying and installing our own products. For anything you’ve bought elsewhere, a local fitter is the right call.
